Lindsey Murphy

Lindsey Murphy is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), and is currently the Social Worker for the UAB Gynecologic Oncology Clinic at UAB Women and Infants. In addition to this role, Lindsey acts in a supportive capacity for the Woman to Woman Program, providing guidance and psychosocial care as necessary. She graduated from Auburn University in 2010 with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Social Work. Lindsey went on to complete a Master of Social Work from the University of Alabama in 2012. Her first major work experience consisted of working on a team of 5 social workers at the Hospice of Marshall County in Albertville, Alabama. This position stemmed from Lindsey’s fervor for Medical Social Work, specifically with patients at the end of life. Her patients were sick, scared, and—unfortunately—often isolated, with strikingly different needs as compared to the general patient population. Regardless, this time only further ingrained Lindsey’s goals for the future: to work with patients coping with life-threatening illnesses, and to foster happiness and comfort as patients undergo difficult treatment journeys or face a terminal diagnosis.

In September 2014, Lindsey commenced work as the sole Social Worker for the UAB Gyn Onc Clinic. On a day-to-day basis, she helps patients cope with or adjust to illness, guiding women and their families through healthcare obstacles and helping them activate resources when necessary. She assists patients with insurance procedures and logistics, and of course, provides emotional support. Lindsey describes her position as instantaneously challenging, unpredictable, emotional, sad, and—most importantly—hopeful. She explains, “As long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to help others, but especially when they are vulnerable and facing some of the darkest points in their lives—at the points when they feel lost, confused, and alone. Working to make someone’s life better during a terrible time is rewarding and also an incredible privilege.”

Lindsey ultimately aspires to provide counseling and therapy to her patients, and is working to transition to this arena of Medical Social Work. In her spare time, she enjoys cheering for Auburn football, hiking, photography, and traveling abroad with her husband. However, Lindsey’s favorite pastime is playing with Baby Paisley and relishing the new joys of parenthood.
